Cell phones! Cell phones and more cell phones! Everyone has a cell phone and at least one person always forgets to turn in off when asked to do so! I wish I had a box made out of cell phone signal blocking material that people could put there cell phone into when asked………. whether they be in a movie theatre or even a classroom! Their cell phones in the box would not ring because because they could not receive a signal! Hey Dr. Smith! I’ve got a great idea! Dr. Smith! Let’s build a cell phone signal blocking box! …….I wonder what type of material we should use…..I wonder if such a box can even be built????? If we can figure this out I’ll be one happy dog!
In order to figure out how to build a potential cell phone signal blocker we need to discuss light. light is strange, it can act like a particle or a wave. in order to build a cell phone signal blocker it will be most beneficial to focus on the wave properties of light. As we can see with water dripping into a bucket of water, the water waves created by the drops have an amplitude , a length , and a direction. The length of a wave is referred to as its wavelength.
It is the wavelength of light that determines the name of the region of light. Very long wavelengths of light, on the order of the size of buildings down to our size roughly six feet, are called Radio waves. Microwaves have a wavelength around the size of a honey bee. It is hard to believe but the light that our eyes detect are roughly the wavelength that match the size of molecules with red being the longest and violet the shortest! All these different ranges of light are referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum. Notice the shorter the wavelength of the light, the more energetic the light is. For example, light that is the size of atoms -called X rays; are so powerful they can pass through skin and muscle but not bone allowing doctors and dentists to use X-rays to take pictures of our bones and teeth to help them make diagnoses……..If we are going to build a cell phone signal blocker, we need to know where cell phone signals fall on the electromagnetic spectrum. Cell phone signals are in the region between radio and microwaves, this region here so there wavelength is between several feet down to the size of roughly a bumble bee.

One of the waves is an oscillating magnetic field and the other is an oscillating electric field. If we are going to build a cell phone signal blocker, we need to find something that will block these fields! when a fluorescent light is placed close to a plasma ball the electric and magnetic fields of the plasma ball excite the gases inside the fluorescent bulb and these excited gas molecules strike the fluorescent sides of the bulb generating light! Isn’t that cool! ……………… So if we place a material between the fluorescent bulb and the plasma ball and the bulb fails to light up then that means we have found a material that blocks electric and magnetic fields! Let’s try some different materials….let’s first try a glass lid….nope…..how about a metal lid?……It works…….how about aluminum foil?……it works!……..
Recall radio waves are very close to cell phone signals on the electromagnetic spectrum. That gives me an idea for another experiment. If we turn on a radio and surround it with a radio wave blocking material, the sound from the radio has to stop! AND if the material can not block radio waves the sound from the radio has to continue! Here are a bunch of experiments, which ones do you think will block radio waves from being received by the radio? Let’s try each material and see which ones work!
