This video is to bring you a closer look at the National Guard Products 429E. This is a mill finish aluminum saddle threshold. A saddle threshold because if you use your imagination it is shaped like a saddle. The 429E is representative of this profile. There is an image below this video showing the important dimensional properties. 9″ wide, 1/2″ tall. Take note of the feature down here and we will go over that more in a moment. Saddle thresholds are used in practically all types of instances. When you’ve got just a flat sort of surface and you need to raise an area beneath the door so that you can seal against a threshold is obviously what is used for that. Saddle types are very common. Why you would want a 9″ is because it might be simply more compatible with a deeper frame that you are working with. You might have an 8-3/4″ jamb depth or maybe 12″ or something just simply larger and you want a wider threshold to suit whatever surface sill condition that you have. Also, I’ve had some people who have taken and coped the profile of their frame right into this wider threshold so that you can have a frame sitting inside and run the legs long all the way to the face. Lets say you have a 3′ door and the outer dimension of that is 40″, you could order these 40″, cope it, tip it in so that your threshold runs long and that acts as a way to additionally defend against the erosion of the bottom of the jambs of the frame which is where you will always initially see rust begin. Slip resistance finish is also available where they are going to bead blast this and coat it with a slick it aint which is what the SIA stands for which will significantly increase the anti-slip properties of the threshold. Also bead blasted as well which gives it a look. There is this threshold listed in the site in all lengths from 2′ to 8′ in 6″ increments. You can order it in any size that you want and it is going to come with screws. If this was the general article, your first countersinks would be soldier stacked in something this wide would be about 5″ or so from the end. If you have need for a custom length, by all means let us know by simply ordering the next longest piece or pieces and indicating in the comment field what length you want us to cut the material back to. The reasoning is this. If this was 4′, and you needed to cut it to 42″, you would eliminate those first two countersinks for sure. Then you will be stuck drilling two new holes, countersinking two new holes after you have managed to cut this and that is wide for your typical miter box saw. You really want countersunk holes from the factory because it allows the flathead screws to do the best potential job. I’ve seen countless failed threshold installations. Take note the next time you walk over a threshold and it seems to give a little when you walk on it, look down and see the integrity of those screws because I will bet you that they were just round holes drilled and a screw run into it. If it was me, I like to use machine bolts, flat head 1024 or machine bolts and use lead anchors that makes for an installation that is set it and forget it. There is a lot of force on the threshold and there is a lot of force this way on the threshold and that is just working that screw head loose over time. So the more the better with anchoring a threshold down, belts and suspenders. Thank you.
