This video shows how you can make a battery out of a tab from an aluminum can, a paper clip, a cloth and some drain cleaner (NaOH) for use with a joule thief that will light a 3V super bright white LED. I call this our “Solar CITIES ‘tab torch’.” Depending on what aluminum can we use we’ve also called it “the Bud Light” and the “Coca Cola Light” and “the Sprite Light” etc. The aluminum can tab is the anode (black negative lead) and the paper clip is the cathode (red positive lead). Only the aluminum tab and the sodium hydroxide electrolyte are used up in the reaction. You will have to renew the NaOH (draino) occasionally, and I have found that dilution is necessary — too much makes the tab bubble hydrogen and get too hot. The tab oxidizes and becomes grey and eventually brittle. Keeping the light lit continuously is still an issue that needs to be worked out and involves experimenting with the NaOH concentration. This is something that high school or middle school kids can do as a fun experiment but has real applicability in areas where there is no electricity and batteries are hard to come by and is also useful in disasters — wherever you have a source of scrap aluminum and some drain cleaner you have a source of electricity. Aluminum foil also works fine but doesn’t last as long. Note that the “joule thief” circuit, which you can build for about 3 dollars in parts, is the crucial piece here.
