This video is to bring you a closer look at the Dorbin 380A. This is a piece of mill finished aluminum threshold is what it is. The 380A from Dorbin is a representative of this profile of threshold and is a very common piece of weatherstripping in not only its dimensional properties, but also in its general profile of being a saddle threshold of its mill aluminum finish. This is incredibly common is what I am trying to say. The 380 is representative of the fact that this is a 6″ wide threshold that is 1/4″ tall. The A means mill aluminum so this is what the threshold will look like as the threshold is literally extruded at the mill. It is also available from Dorbin in the D finish which is a dark brown finish from them. . This is just a 6″ sample piece and serves for the purposes of this video. You are going to use this 6″ threshold with 1/4″ rise in numerous applications. Aluminum storefront doors, aluminum clear anodized aluminum storefront doors. 6″ x 1/4″ is absolutely very common. The 6 is very common with hollow metal doors and frames and the 1/4″ is sometimes a bit less common only in the sense that a typical undercut industry standard for hollow metal doors and frames is a 3/4″ undercut and you would use a 1/2″ rise. Someone specifically says that they want the low profile one, they are probably meaning a 1/4″ or wanting handicap compliant even though it now includes 1/2″ rise this is what they are referring to. Your client is saying I want to put a bigger door sweep on the bottom of the door and a lower threshold because I’m going to take hand cart deliveries over it all of the time. That is a great reason as well. 6″ is very commiserate to your typical 5-3/4″ jamb depth profiles on hollow metal frames. The aluminum store fronts or close to 5″, I don’t know that industry nearly as well. So it is very accurate with those. Dorbin is going to be able to give you a 5″ wide or 379, a 4″ wide their 378, a 7″ wide which becomes a 381 in a 1/4″ rise. I believe they can do an 8″ wide as well and if you have a need, let us know. I’m partial to Dorbin and it is because they have a great quality product and customer service with predictable industry leading quick lead times so I have over the decades of buying and distributing Dorbin material that they become our go to company for weatherstripping like this. This is available in the website in several different lengths from 2′ out to 8′ at 6″ increments. If you have need for a custom length, by all means let us know by ordering the next longest piece or pieces and indicate in the comment field what length you want us to cut the material back to. The reasoning is it will save you the trouble of cutting it to length but also drill and countersink the hole that would be in the threshold. So that first countersink is probably 5″ or so from the end. If you have a 4′ length and need to cut it back to 42″, you would eliminate that countersink and be stuck drilling another one and countersinking it and then the centers would no longer be accurate as well. It is handy to have all of that done from the factory to save you the labor. Drilling the hole isn’t a big deal, but countersinking it is. You want it countersunk properly so that all of the lateral force of the threshold, the screw has a much better job which are typically a #10 x 1-1/2 flat head screw. That screw has a fighting chance keeping that threshold exactly where it is supposed to be especially if you are going to be taking weight over it like a loaded hand cart is what I mean by that. So if you ordered a custom length, we would not only cut it to length but would cut that proper countersink at the proper distance from the edge and the proper center to center. This would go very well with a door sweep and would also go very well with an automatic door bottom that might be installed on either the face or the inverted bottom channel of a hollow metal door. You might want to consider a brush style because of the fluted grooves in here which give it significant amount of more slip resistance although it is not classified as slip resistant but it is a fluted top is what this is. Finally, there is a link below this video to the manufacturer’s page where you can pull up the full line Dorbin catalog and review all things weatherstripping related from Dorbin. As I had mentioned earlier we are partial to Dorbin and it is because of several decades long working relationship between my family and the company Dorbin. Any questions on the 380A by Dorbin 6″ x 1/4″ threshold or any other Dorbin product, please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you.
