Well folks… here it is. One of the most iconic cars of all time, and a dream of any collector. The 1970 Shelby Cobra GT500.
But wait… it gets better. This Shelby is not just your typical 1970 GT500. This particular investment piece is equipped with the 428 Super Cobra Jet engine, a 4-speed manual close ratio transmission and the super-rare Drag Pack!
Here is the breakdown that is crucial to any investment car:
789 – 1970 Shelbys. Of those;
470 – were GT500’s. Of those;
380 – were fastbacks. Of those;
172 – had 4-speed manual transmission. Of those:
20 – were Grabber Blue. Of those;
17 – had black bucket seats. Of those;
7 – had Drag Pack. Of those;
6 – had sport deck rear seats. Of those;
4 – had Tinted Glass. Of those;
2 – had an AM radio.
Those 2 cars were identical twins.
One of those twins is this car.
As you can see… this is truly an investment car. This Shelby has undergone a restoration within the last 10 years during which the following was performed:
- Original engine completely rebuilt
- Ross racing pistons installed
- Bored .030 over
- Isky cam
- Hydraulic lifters installed
- Engine balanced
- New oil pump
- New fuel pump
- New water pump
- Tilton extreme duty starter
- Clutch replaced
- Torque boxes replaced
- Drive shaft balanced
- Axle locators installed
- Cross-ties welded front & rear
This car had minimal rust repair during the restoration, and still retains all its original sheet metal. There are a couple small metal patches in the rear quarter panels, but you would never notice them. The floorpans and trunk floor are completely original. Take a look at the photos of the underside of this car. The underside HAS NEVER BEEN RESTORED! It may not be all shiny and new, but it does show the real condition of the underside of the car! As you can see in the photos; the original underside is very solid, and in very good shape for the cars age.
The interior of this car is COMPLETELY ORIGINAL! It has never been replaced! The bucket seats are in very good condition with only one small hole in the driver’s seat. The carpet, headliner, dashpad, rear seats and interior trim are all in excellent shape for being original.
Of course a car of this stature will come with an array of original paperwork and receipts. There is an entire book documenting the history of the car including
- An original sales copy from Shelby Automotive Co, Inc.
- Original Order Sheet from Shelby
- Complete Deluxe Marti Report
- Original titles to previous owners
- An appraisal from 1989
- Numerous receipts from the restoration
- Much more!
The Marti Report for this car shows the following items were installed at the factory:
- 4-Speed Close Ratio Manual Transmission
- 428SCJ Engine / Drag Pack
- Visibility Group
- Goodyear Brand Name Tires
- Sport Deck Rear Seat
- Power Front Disc Brakes
- Power Steering

172 428SCJ / 4-Speed manual
104 428SCJ / Drag Pack
A car like this doesn’t come around very often. This is an opportunity to own a true investment that will do nothing but increase in value.
1970 was the last year of the first generation of Carroll Shelby’s legendary GT, which bowed out in high style and with Ford’s most powerful regular production engine under the hood. Both the GT350 and GT500 bore unique body work that was a complete departure from earlier models. Fiberglass was used in the front fenders and hood, which featured no fewer than five NACA ducts for cooling and intake. The front and rear brakes were fed by fender mounted scoops, and the rear of the car used a fiberglass deck lid and extensions to form a rear spoiler. 1965 Thunderbird tail lights filled the rear valence, beneath which was a unique center-mounted aluminum exhaust bezel. As in recent past years, the Mustang’s Deluxe Interior Group was standard and included Shelby Cobra emblems, console mounted Stewart Warner oil and amp gauges, fog light switches, full instrumentation and a roll bar with inertia reel safety belts.
