I really enjoyed the archery in the Hunger Games movie, especially when it came to picking out the bows and trying to figure out how they were made. It’s also quite funny to see a bow go from being right side up in one shot to upside down in the next, only to be right side up a second later. That aside, of the three separate styles of bow I saw in the movie, my favorite was the very first bow.

In the book, the bow Katniss used for hunting in District 12 was made by her father. It wasn’t her bow, she grew out of her own, it was one of her father’s hunting bows. I was impressed by the fact that, while it looked light a very light-weight bow (and had to be for filming reasons), the first bow was a wooden bow. While a bow in this style is very straightforward, building one can be tricky. It’s so simple, it’s the only bow you can get a ‘prop replica’ version of. It’s so tricky, these replicas are not meant to be used in any capacity.

In this little video series, we’re going to build a bow like the one in the movie, adapted to the strengths of PVC pipe. It’s a single-piece bow made of one PVC pipe without any wood or fillers. While it is a light bow at around 20-25 pounds, it still is pretty fast and a great bow for fine-tuning your form or costuming. If made from 1 inch pipe, this bow would probably be closer to 40-50 pounds and not true to the movie-bow dimensions, which was a 20-25 pound bow. But that’s another video.

    Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Here’s a better description of some things you will need as well as links to videos and some items on Amazon.

3/4″ Schedule 40 PVC pipe, 56 inches long (1.05in outer diameter, 0.12in thick walls; 26mm outer diameter, 3mm thick walls)

The heating trough is made of a non-conductive base like cardboard or wood shaped like a gutter or round tube, covered in a reflective material like aluminum foil or flashing.

The clamp used on the ends of the bow is made of two 1×2 boards cut 9 inches long, connected by a hinge with a 1/4″ gap between the boards.
