  • This video covers the installation process of the gable edge trim. Mark discusses placement of the gable edge trim at the eave, joining two pieces of the gable edge trim along a single gable, and how to join the pieces where they meet at the ridge line.

    ***To address several comments/concerns about the overlap of the two pieces being done the wrong way, you all are indeed correct that in virtually all situations the roofer wants the upper piece of a flashing to overlap the lower. In this case that is exactly what is occurring in the water return channel on the roof deck, which will indeed carry some water. The reverse lapping on the face has the benefit of making the lap very less noticeable from the ground and may be desired from an aesthetic standpoint. In our training classes, we always recommend that if the installer is considering using a reverse lap on the face, that he review the two options with the homeowner who may think that the inside channel is lapped the wrong way when it is not. On top of the minuscule amount of rain that might penetrate this small reverse lap, if the coil on the fascia is up under the gable edge trim and the underlayment is lapped 1” over the corner of the roof and the coil (as is called for in the manual), water infiltration will never be a problem at this lap. We did confer with a board member of the Metal Construction Association on this detail and he actually liked the reverse lap and didn’t see any water issues with it.
